Intro

Naming your mixed nut snack tin “Nut Case” takes a certain self-awareness.

Most airlines trying to break into business class take themselves far too seriously, describing every detail in grandiose terms and treating each element as a revelation. IndiGo’s approach is deliberately playful; in some ways, that’s the most interesting part of this product.

Whether the food measures up to the packaging is another matter.

Istanbul to Mumbai

This was a two-sector run I purchased as business class airfare: Istanbul to Mumbai, operated by IndiGo using a wet-leased Turkish Airlines Boeing 777-300ER, followed by Mumbai to Singapore on an A321neo in IndiGoStretch, the airline’s new business class introduced in November 2024.

An IndiGo aeroplane is parked at an airport gate as a catering lorry services it and a jet bridge connects to the aircraft for boarding or disembarking.

The Istanbul-Mumbai leg offers a wide-body, while Mumbai-Singapore provides a single-aisle, enhanced business class journey on IndiGoStretch.

Understanding these distinct experiences is important before you book.

The 777 on IndiGo’s Istanbul route is wet-leased from Turkish Airlines. Only Turkish Airlines sells the business-class cabin at the front.

Book through IndiGo, and youโ€™re in economy, even if you book the front row or a Stretch fare.

The curtain separating you from the full flat-bed seats stays firmly closed.

On this 6.5-hour flight, I’m offered a rice and curry main. The curry had real flavour, but itโ€™s still quite a basic meal concept.

A tray with a meal of rice, curry, bread roll, butter, a cup of juice or tea, and a cup of water served on an aeroplane tray table.

Mumbai to Singapore

The A321neo sector to Singapore features the new product, while other routes may use different seats. IndiGoStretch offers 12 seats in a 2ร—2 layout with Recaro R5 recliners: 38-inch pitch, 21.3-inch width, and 5-inch recline.

Two blue upholstered aeroplane seats with quilted patterns in a premium cabin, featuring wide armrests and seatback trays, next to windows.

These are true recliner seats, not just a blocked middle with more legroom. The diamond-quilted fabric, embossed headrest logo, pillow, and blanket complete the look.

The meal service is where IndiGo’s LCC DNA meets its ambitions for business class.

The tray presents well with real crockery, stainless-steel cutlery with a blue cord, a printed menu card, the “Nut Case” tin with pink-salted nuts, plus separate bowls for the strawberry crรชpe and fruit.

Airline meal on a tray includes a bread roll, main course with breaded items and sauce, cold meats, dessert, nuts, a cup of juice, cutlery, and a menu on an aeroplane seatback tray table.

Meals are created with Oberoi Flight Services, a respected partner.

On this routing, IndiGoStretch came with no lounge access.

You’re paying for the seat, the priority boarding, the tray presentation, and complimentary drinks, not a lounge, not a hot meal, not a flat bed.

The menu featured a tomato pesto bocconcini sandwich, hash brown vegetable casserole with tomato sauce and cheese, fruit bowl with dragon fruit, watermelon, and mango, and a strawberry crรชpe.

The problem is structural, not culinary. IndiGo’s aircraft have no ovens.

The hash brown casserole, three crumbed patties in tomato sauce, topped with shredded cheese, arrived at room temperature.

With Oberoi designing the menu, the concepts are there, but execution stops at the galley.

Serving a hash brown casserole cold is a hard ask of any passenger expecting a business-class meal.

The Delay

Bad weather over Singapore forced a diversion to Kuala Lumpur. It’s not IndiGo’s usual stomping ground and not a situation any airline handles perfectly.

Refuelling, slot coordination, and getting back in the air added roughly 3.5 hours to the journey.

Passengers were not shy about expressing their frustration. You can’t argue with Mother Nature.

The crew moved through the cabin with water bottles and snacks, kept communication calm and consistent, and managed a genuinely stressful situation without visibly cracking.

A cup of instant noodles with a wooden fork rests on an aeroplane tray table, with aeroplane seats and pocket materials visible in the background.

For an airline still bedding in its international operation, that composure at an unfamiliar diversion airport says something about the crew culture.

Conclusion

It’s worth it if you’re flying IndiGo’s Mumbaiโ€“Singapore or similar medium-haul international routes.

You get a proper seat with genuine extra space, a good crew, and a tray that actually looks like someone tried.

The IndiGoStretch product is a credible first step for an LCC entering the premium space, and the cabin hardware is solid.

Skip it, or go in with calibrated expectations, if you’re on the Istanbul sectors expecting business-class parity.

If cold food at business class prices is a dealbreaker, the maths won’t work regardless of how good the nut tin looks.

IndiGoStretch offers more legroom and better service than legacy carriers on short international routes.

But if you care about a hot meal, Air India’s business class is the clear winner.
