Intro

Chicken or fish on Malaysia Airlines economy?

That’s your choice on most Asian routes, but here’s what actually matters – whether the crew care and if the food’s edible.

I tested MH’s economy on two flights: from Bali to KL, then from KL to Manila.

Same airline, same meal options, but very different experiences.

Here’s what you’re really getting.

Economy Class

Meal service started 15 minutes after takeoff on the A330.

Crew delivered special meals first, then came around with the standard options – chicken or fish.

I went with the chicken, which was actually decent.

It came with a packet of nuts and a water bottle – nothing fancy, but did the job.

The beverage cart followed after the meal.

Worth knowing that Malaysia Airlines doesn’t serve alcohol on flights within three hours of Kuala Lumpur, so don’t expect a beer with dinner.

About 45 minutes after takeoff, the crew came back to collect rubbish and offer another drink round.

Service wrapped up within an hour, then it was descent time into KL.

The crew on this leg weren’t particularly engaging – they did their job but no more than that.

KL To Manila

The four-hour KL to Manila flight was a different story.

Same meal choices (chicken or fish), but the crew made all the difference.

Once airborne, service started quickly with the same options. Went with chicken again – consistent with the first flight, which is what you want.

This crew actually seemed to care.

Friendly interactions, checked on passengers during the meal, made the flight feel less like cattle transport and more like actual service.

They took time to explain meal options properly and were genuinely helpful with requests.

Same airline, same route network, same food, but completely different experience based on who’s working that day.

Shows how much crew attitude affects the whole experience.

Conclusion

Malaysia Airlines’ economy is a tale of two services – it depends entirely on your crew.

The food’s consistent enough (chicken was fine both times), and they stick to their schedule.

The alcohol policy within three hours of KL might catch some passengers off guard, so plan accordingly if you’re expecting a drink.

If you’re flying these Asian routes, MH economy does the basics right.
